Elijah found Elisha out in a field ploughing with 12 yoke of oxen.

Elijah walked up to Elisha and threw his coat (mantle) over him. It was a sign that Elisha had been chosen by God to become a prophet who would one day take over from Elijah. Elisha left his oxen and ran after Elijah.

‘Let me kiss my father and mother goodbye,’ Elisha said, ‘and then I will come with you.’ ‘Go back,’ Elijah replied. So Elisha returned to his parents. He took his yoke of oxen and slaughtered them.

He burned his ploughing equipment to cook the meat. There was no way he could now carry on doing the job he had.

He then shared the meat with his parents and the people who had come to say goodbye. They had a big feast together.

After eating and saying goodbye, Elisha set off with Elijah to begin the new job that God had chosen for him.
