The Queen of Sheba before King Solomon (c. 1630)
Willem de Poorter 1608 – 1649
oil on panel (35 × 44 cm) — c. 1630
2 Chronicles 9:2 - And Solomon told her all her questions: and there was nothing hid from Solomon which he told her not.The Queen of Sheba had heard of King Solomon's legendary wisdom and wanted to see for herself. She travelled from Sheba (probably present-day Yemen) to the king's court in Jerusalem. There she tested him with a series of tough questions, which he replied to in an impressively calm manner - and correctly.
Here the queen humbly kneels before the king. Her servants carry expensive plates and other gifts in vessels.
The panel is part of the Leiden Collection.
