This is one of the panels of a large altarpiece that Masaccio made for the church of Santa Maria del Carmine in Pisa. Many of the c. 20 original panels that formed the polyptich are lost. The remaining 11 are scattered all over the world. One is in Pisa, depicting Paul.
Saint Andrew is identified by the book and cross. Note that Masaccio did not use the X-shaped St. Andrews cross, on which the apostle is said to have been martyred.
Another way to distinguish Andrew from his brother Peter is by his long, often unkempt beard and hair. Peter's hair was curly and more controled.
