Judas Hangs Himself
Judas Hangs Himself
James Tissot 1836 – 1902
opaque watercolour on paper (30 × 16 cm) — c. 1890
Matthew 27:5 - And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.
The gospel of Matthew says that Judas repented over his treason. He tried to return the money to the priests, but they rejected it. Judas then threw the money on the floor, went out and hung himself. Tissot here shows him dangling from a tree, surrounded by crows.
This work is from a series by Tissot on the life of Jesus.
