Saint Jude Thaddeus
Georges de La Tour 1593 - 1652
oil on canvas (62 × 53 cm) — 1615-1620
Jude 1:1 - Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called:
Jude Thaddeus was one of Jesus' disciples and apostles. He may have been a brother of James the Minor. He is also seen by some as the author of the Epistle of Jude, but that letter may have been written as late as in the 2nd century.
Georges de La Tour here shows Jude with his usual attribute: the halberd. Legend has it that Jude was clubbed to death in Perzië.
