Simone Martini ca. 1284 – 1344
tempera on panel (57 × 38 cm) — c. 1326
Matthew 4:18 - And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.
This panel is one of five that together formed an altarpiece. A predella was added in the 15th century. The panels and the predella are now spread across the world in different museums.
From left to right the altarpiece showed St. Ansanus (patron saint of Siena), St. Peter, Madonna and Child, Saint Andrew, and Saint Luke.
In 1326 Simone Martini received a payment from the city of Siena for an altarpiece, probably this one. The background has a gold ground. The refined technique is characteristic for Martini.
