Adoration of the Lamb
Adoration of the Lamb
Michiel Coxcie 1499 – 1592
oil on panel (133 × 236 cm) — 1557-1559
Revelation 5:6 - And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.
This is the central panel from a copy of the famous Ghent altarpiece by the Van Eyck brothers.
The Spanish king Philip II collected paintings made by Flemish masters. He very much wanted the Ghent altarpiece, which however could not leave Ghent. Philip then commissioned Coxcie to make a copy.
