Genesis 4:3 - And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD.
God accepts the sheep Abel brings, but completely ignores Cain's offering. Cain couldn't quite cope with that rejection.
Abel was a shepherd, his brother Cain worked the land.
